haiku magnets and an obituary
Feb. 12th, 2004 07:35 pmPutting haiku on the blog seems to have attracted some other haiku like a magnet. I'm happy with that.
Found out today that Edward Said died last September. I'm aware that Said was well known for his political commentary, but he was also a music lover and wrote about that. Last year I read a book called _Parallels and Paradoxes: Explorations in Music and Society_ by Said and Daniel Barenboim. It was one of my favorite non-fiction books of 2003; I haven't read anything that either has written besides that, but it was so well done that I thought I might. Much of it was about music, but it was set up as a dialogue between these two old friends, and thus ranged over all kinds of subject matter. A difficult book to describe, but a book of ideas and not difficult to read.
