If you haven't read Aegypt by John Crowley, and you like novels that explore metaphysical ideas, go right now and read it. It takes a while to warm up, but I am now towards the end, and it just sucks the breath right out of me. Maybe not exactly the same way that Little, Big does, but oh...what a joy it is to read something so fascinating, so perfectly crafted and so many-layered. I find so much of modern fiction, science fiction, and fantasy to be disappointing, never following through completely, or not resonant with reality somehow. Aegypt is like water in the desert.
