westerling: (Glenn Gould)
http://snurri.livejournal.com/128195.html This is a link to a journal entry about St. Paul's winter carnival, which [personal profile] rudi pointed me to. It's fascinating how old myths and traditions resurface--misrule, the battle between the winter king and the summer king, merry-making to drive the dark away, all of these things incarnated in a New World, frontier-town context, complete with Ice Palaces and fireworks (well, sometimes, apparently). It also reminds me a little bit of Basler Fastnacht, where, briefly, the everyday and the fantastically surreal exist side-by-side as costumed and masked people walk up and down the streets of the city, playing fifes and drums and looking vaguely threatening.

Also, if one of you computer whizzes out there can explain to me why this link works if I don't incorporate it into an html link, but if I try to do the whole {a} thing, the exact same link (copied and pasted) brings up a 404, please tell me. My links only work about half the time, and I swear the html architecture around them is correct [a href text="website"] according to the LJ FAQ directions, so it must be something that I'm supposed to be/not supposed to be including in the link itself. And I'm sure it's something really dumb and self-explanatory, but I don't know what it is because I have only a little bit of html skill, so PLZ HLAP KTHX.
