Adventures with gluesticks
Jan. 16th, 2004 10:25 pmOne more frigid night and day. It was 4 degrees in Shelburne Falls at 1:30, not counting wind chill. Everybody in Minnesota is probably sniggering behind their hands at us right now, like we laugh at people down south who cancel school after two snowflakes come down. Nobody was out, school's closed, and it was viciously cold. Until I got to work, I spent the whole day just trying to avoid being outside; then when I got to work, I spent the whole day stripped down to a tank top. Really, the temperature in here is totally ridiculous. Sometimes, the air conditioner comes on, it's so hot in here. On the other hand, I could be like t_ktl and have to do farm chores all day in this weather, though she in fact lives in somewhat milder climes. I would take some kind of happy medium, I guess.
We had art class this morning, and G-boy was very happy. We made Matisse-like paper paintings, and he was right in his element...cut paper? Are you kidding? This is the child who regularly cuts papers into little tiny confetti all over our living room floor. He'll do it for hours, quite literally. What does this mean for his future career? Or is my child on the path to OCD?
Then you take those little pieces of paper and glue them onto a big piece. The most fun part for me--not--was when he managed to screw the entire gluestick out of its shell; by the time I caught him, he was trying to jam the cap on the length of exposed pink gluestick and force the whole thing back to its original state. There's something about this that I don't want to think about.
Random things I learned today:
The NRA is trying to let the ban on assault weapons expire, according to Michael Douglas, who sent me an email today. MD is not my favorite celeb, but he's apparently useful for the liberal cause, so I'll try to live in peace with that.
My kid is starting to learn the rudiments of art composition. Now I suppose I will have to, too.
Practicing violin every day is difficult when you have to try to leave for work all the time.
Now listening to Book on Tape _Darwin's Radio_ by Greg Bear. So far, pretty creepy, and I'm only on tape 2. Knowing GB, it's going to be a lot creepier and probably really cool by the end.
