"Life is an unanswered question, but let's still believe in the dignity and importance of the question." --Tennessee Williams

A very low-key weekend had by all. I got a bunch of things done, but also did a lot of reading, and some walks in the great outdoors. Much of Friday and Saturday, I worked on wildlife designs, and drew a great blue heron with wings outstretched in flight that looks like it will be my first finished piece. I'll work with it again on Friday. While I was drawing it, I got a sense of the architecture of the bird, and a fleeting sympathetic feeling of soaring flight. What a majestic bird! They fly over town occasionally. I'm actually surprised that none have found their way to my grandfather's pond on the farm. It's currently full up with escapee goldfish (my uncle dumped 4 in a couple of years ago) and could use some culling. Goldfish breed quickly in the wild, in case anybody wants to know. I'll have to do the traditional great blue heron ritual dance next to the pond to attract one this year.

Violin went well today. We had about as focussed lesson as it's possible to have with a four-year-old, and he practiced almost every day last week, sometimes without any prompting at all. (But he's a little bored with "Twinkle"). G is now ready for the next size of violin, which means an excuse to go to Brattleboro and have lunch at the Indian restaurant across the street from the violin shop. G tells me today that he "loves tandoori chicken." Clearly, we are bringing this child up properly.

David said very nice things about my violin playing today. I am surprised at how quickly this has begun to feel comfortable. He told me to go ahead and start learning anything I want, first from the Suzuki cd and then whatever fiddle music interests me. David seems to think I'm going in the right direction, and I sometimes feel like my grandfather is guiding my hands. This is beginning to take on a dimension that I wasn't expecting because I didn't really know what to expect. After all, the lessons were about G, who begged for them, and I'm just the Suzuki parent, learning in tandem. I wanted to learn fiddle, sure, but I could've lined it up behind a dozen other projects and been fine with that. Anything else is a bonus.
